Warm Greenhouses

Warm greenhouses will allow you to be a lot more adventurous with your choice of fruit and vegetables you will be grown, and lets you grow more exotic fruit and vegetables.

Warm greenhouses are definitely for the more adventurous and keen gardener as it can be a costly hobby, however the produce make it all worthwhile. The temperature of a warm greenhouse should never fall below 10 degrees C.

The only negative to a warm greenhouse is the cost; fuel bills can be double the usual fee or more depending on the type of heating system, type of fruit or vegetable being grown and the size of your greenhouse.

The main positive of a warm greenhouse is of course the wide variety of fruit and vegetables to be grown, but also the advantage it gives you compared to being grown in an unheated greenhouse or you garden vegetable patch.

For example strawberries that are being grown in a pot will be ready early April, if these we being grown in a unheated greenhouse they would not be ready until early May and in a garden early June!!!

Just like unheated greenhouses you will need to ensure that during the summer months the greenhouse is well ventilated, plants are watered properly and kept out of direct sunlight as much as possible. It is during the winter months where you see the big difference between the warm and unheated greenhouse.

A well ventilated warmer greenhouse owner need to be so concerned of careful watering during the winter months as grey mould will not be a problem for you. It’s also much nicer to work in a warmer greenhouse during the wet and windy British winter.

Below is a small selection of what can be grown in warm greenhouses:
Grapes
Lemons
Oranges
Tangerines
Peppers
Aubergines
Cucumbers
Tomatoes (for earlier in the year)

These are all in addition to those named above in the unheated greenhouse, which will also grow in your heated greenhouse, they will be ready 4-5 weeks earlier than if the were planted in the unheated greenhouse.
